Fashion Takes Capital By Storm

You may know that Washington, D.C. isn’t known to be a fashion capital — but the city gets fierce and dolled up as it celebrates the power of style for the week of February 21 through 27.

Starting this week, seven events will be dedicated to high fashion, trends and couture, also known as DC Fashion Week. International clothing designers will be presenting a range of Fall/Winter collections for 2011. Different textiles and patterns bring out designs from Iran, Nigeria, Thailand and many other countries and cultures.

Check out the schedule for the free admission events:

  •  DC Fashion Week holds its’ Kickoff Reception on Monday at Kellari Taverna from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  •  The Textile Museum hosts two special events: Colors of the Oasis (Central Asian Ikats) on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Second Lives: The Age-Old Art of Recycling on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  •  Get ready to mingle with models, stylists, producers and photographers at The Fashion Industry Networking Party on Thursday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Tabaq Bistro.

Not everything is open to the public. The weekend gets fancy with “special invitation only” events. On Friday, the television network premiere of DC Cupcakes is presented at a private launch party from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Saturday night, The Washington Post Conference Center hosts a runway show on Washington Menswear Collections from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Eight fashion houses present their latest creations for gentlemen of style. Tickets are required.

DC Fashion Week comes to an end with a fashion show on International Couture Collections on Sunday evening from 5:30 p.m to 8 p.m. The Embassy of France will be open to show off a mixture of 17 world-wide labels. Tickets are required, and cocktail attire is highly requested.

All you fashionistas — don’t miss out on the largest exhibit of fashion apparel brought to you by the nation’s capital.
